The Art of Adrianne McCown

   "I've been an INXS fan for nearly 21 years.  I've been a fan through the good times, through the bad times and through the worst time.  I began doing portraits of the band members as a way of expressing my thanks for their music and the joy it gave me.  The first portrait I did of front man Michael Hutchence was in the spring of 1988.  I entitled it 'Michael in Black Leather'.  It is the only original piece I still have of my INXS portraits.  Michael autographed it for me at a concert the band did at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin in August of 1988.

   "I have been all over the US to see INXS perform and the portraits I did had the benefit of allowing me the opportunity of meeting all the guys in the band.  I can say that, without exception, all of them were very kind, generous and down to earth; even Michael who could be and was every inch the 'rock star'.

   INXS music has gotten me through some of the worst times of my life including, ironically, the untimely and inexplicable death of Michael Hutchence.  A lot of fans I know stopped listening to INXS after Michael died.  I guess it hurt too much, and I admit that it was a few months after that tragic event before I was able to listen to it myself.  But the music means too much to me, and when I'm riding in my car or sitting at home and I crank up an INXS tune the joy is still there.  In some ways it's like Michael never left.  I guess as long as we have that music he never really will leave us.  Just like Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, and all the people who left us too soon but left a part of their soul behind.

   I love music.  It's a passion of mine and a passion I have passed on to my children.  I can't make music, but I appreciate it beyond words to express.  So my instrument is my pencil and a piece of paper.  Most of my portraits are of people I feel passionately about.  Most of them happen to be musicians.  In the future I will be doing portraits of Jerry Garcia (a favorite of my son's), and I have a portrait of Kurt Cobain I hope to have on this site in the near future.  I am also working on a portrait of 'The Lord of the Rings' fellowship.  Books are another passion of mine."
